An H2o client who typically utilizes our services for new construction and commercial work called us regarding his office building. He purchased a 1930s, 3-story, Craftsman-Style house that had been converted to office space. He was the 2nd owner after the first remodel, and he had little knowledge of the conditions of the plumbing pipe. He had dealt with a couple of clogged toilets though, and initially, he thought clogs were related to products that were flushed and not intended for toilets.
By the time he called us, the bathroom was completely flooded with sewage, and it had seeped into the basement offices. We knew this was a much bigger issue. After using a camera to scope the lines, we discovered there were two breaks in the line, one in front of the property and the 2nd at the street level. The life of that old pipe expired.
We had to first replace the old and broken pipe where it connects to the house line, then we were able to work on the section that connects to the main sewer line.
Unfortunately, this project became pretty expensive having to replace both the sidewalk concrete and the asphalt at the street level on top of replacement and repairs. It pays to know about the age of your plumbing and get your pipes updated before they break. The cost of cleanup is another important consideration, and the damage that sewage can cause internally may render your building uninhabitable. In some instances, walls and flooring have to be replaced.
If you are uncertain about the age of the pipe within your home, but you suspect some issues, give us a call and we would be glad to troubleshoot it for you before it becomes a massive project.
